France’s left wing opposition has won a majority in the upper house, the Senate, for the first time in over 50 years.
The political shift comes as the government battles with a “sluggish economy” and “the eurozone crisis”.
Presidential elections take place in April.
“It was hardly a sweeping popular victory…. But it is a very strong symbol, a sign of a change of mood. … It is far too soon to make predictions about the [Presidential] election.”
